Rwanda, also known as "the land of a thousand hills", is located in east-central Africa and is bordered by Uganda to the north, Tanzania to the east, Burundi to the south and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west.
The country has a temperate climate, with two rainy seasons, from February to April and from November to January.
Its population is about 12 million, of which almost 85% live in rural areas. Its economy is mainly agricultural, producing mainly bananas, coffee and tea, and it is also becoming known as a technological hub in Africa.
The landscapes in this lush green country are truly breathtaking. In its 26,000 km2, Rwanda is home to five volcanoes, three naturally developed national parks, twenty-three lakes and numerous rivers, some of which are the source of the Nile River. Spectacular volcanoes and rainforests, hills and valleys, tranquil lakes and rivers, both in savannah and dense tropical vegetation, dominate the country.
The high-altitude forests of the Virunga volcanic mountains in northern Rwanda are home to the largest number of endangered mountain gorillas in the world. The gorillas, numbering in the hundreds, live in protected areas free from poachers.
Rwanda is one of the few countries in Africa with a unique common language and culture. Having managed and, with effort, overcome the 1994 Tutsi genocide, which resulted in the massacre and death of nearly a million people in a hundred days, both citizens and visitors alike now enjoy security and stability throughout the country.
